Surrender
MFA Thesis Exhibition, William Paterson University, 2025
Emotions deeply influence our lives, shaping relationships, decisions, and mental health. My thesis explores the unheard and uncomfortable emotions that society deems unacceptable, such as shame, sadness, and anger. When ignored, these emotions create a disconnect from our true selves, creating a detriment to our mental health and emotional body. The gallery features nine 5 x 4 ft acrylic paintings, depicting an emotional experience as an "entity."” By illuminating these emotions on a grand scale, they become unavoidable, offering the audience the opportunity to confront and release their feelings in a safe, judgment-free space. While wandering through the gallery, audience members are encouraged to write down their thoughts or feelings next to the corresponding paintings, allowing them to release any emotions that may have been left unspoken. When they are ready, they can fold their paper, and surrender it to the sculpted tree. After the exhibition, I will collect and burn the papers, releasing the unhealed emotions into the universe and letting them vanish from this reality.
